Market Wrap International:
U.S. equities ended the holiday-shortened week with a mixed performance as investors weighed a softer-than-expected U.S. employment report, which eased expectations of a near-term Federal Reserve rate increase and supported financials and defensive sectors, while continued profit-taking in semiconductor and AI-related technology shares limited broader gains. The more measured interest-rate outlook helped improve overall risk sentiment heading into the Independence Day holiday, although trading remained selective across growth stocks. That constructive backdrop carried into Europe, where major markets advanced to fresh record highs as lower U.S. rate expectations, resilient economic activity data and broad-based gains in utilities, industrials and basic materials outweighed weakness in parts of the technology sector. The positive global tone also supported Asia, where the last completed trading session finished mixed but generally firmer, with investors responding to softer U.S. payroll data and reduced expectations for additional Fed tightening, while strength in South Korean equities and improving regional business activity helped offset continued caution toward semiconductor shares in Japan.
