Market Wrap International:
U.S. equities ended lower as a stronger-than-expected August jobs report increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates this month, while higher Treasury yields added pressure to equity valuations ahead of this week’s inflation data. Technology remained mixed, with semiconductor shares outperforming while software and consumer discretionary stocks lagged, and the major markets closed the week with limited overall change. European equities ended the week softer as persistent inflation concerns linked to higher energy prices kept risk appetite restrained, although Volkswagen’s turnaround agreement supported the auto sector and helped offset broader weakness. Asian markets are trading higher today, led by technology and semiconductor shares as investors balanced optimism over global growth from the U.S. jobs data against higher oil prices and renewed Middle East tensions; Japan and South Korea led gains, while Chinese equities were more subdued following a planned capital injection into state-owned insurers and banks.
