Tadawul All Share Index (TASI) fell on Monday’s session ending a streak of four consecutive sessions of gain., dropping by -63 points (-0.5%) to close at 12,556. TASI began the session up by 13 points and then started to decline gradually throughout the session until the end. Overall, 16 out of 20 sectors closed in the red zone, and 147 shares fell while 79 rose. Media (-7.2%), Telecom (-1.7%), and Energy (-0.9%) sectors contributed the most to the index’s fall. Stockwise, Aramco (-0.9%), Elm Co. (-7.8%), STC (-1.9%) were the major contributors. The trading activity witnessed an increase in volume and value of +34% and +30%, respectively, to reach 419mn shares and SAR9.9bn in value traded.
In the U.S., the week began with the S&P 500 closing down by -0.1%, although 6 out of 11 sectors experienced declines. This movement was primarily driven by Industrials sector. The Nasdaq composite closed down by -0.4%. Investors are closely monitoring U.S. consumer prices, expected to rise by 0.4% monthly with an annual pace of 3.1%, along with upcoming domestic labor market data. These indicators will shape central banks' interest rate expectations.
In Europe, shares declined on Monday as technology and resource stocks experienced a sell-off. The Stoxx Europe 600 index fell by -0.4%, while the FTSE 100 rose by 0.1% ahead of a crucial U.S. inflation report and euro zone industrial production figures scheduled for release this week.
In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai Composite Index recorded gains of 1.4% and 0.7%, respectively, as Chinese regulators held meetings with financial institutions, urging large banks to enhance financing support for property developers. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 saw a decline of -2.19%, and the TOPIX index was down by -2.2%.
