Market Wrap International:
U.S. equities ended the session with major benchmarks closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a U.S. federal holiday on which the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq suspend trading for the day. This halted regular equity trading in the U.S. for the holiday, with markets and bond trading paused until the next business day.
European equities ended lower as broader risk sentiment weakened amid renewed trade-related tensions after U.S. tariff threats on several European countries. Export-sensitive sectors underperformed, leaving the FTSE 100 down -0.4%, the DAX declined -1.3%, the CAC 40 fell -1.8%, and the EURO STOXX 600 slipped -1.2% on the session.
Asian markets are trading with mixed results as regional benchmarks reflect divergent flows and ongoing global policy concerns, with China’s SHCOMP up 0.3% and South Korea’s KOSPI gaining 1.3% while Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped -0.7% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng eased -1.0%. These moves track select gains in mainland and export-oriented stocks against weakness in Japan and Hong Kong.
